Ortho-K

Daytime Myopia Control Contact Lenses or Glasses 30–72% *


 Specially designed myopia-control contact lenses and glasses can provide clear vision while also helping slow myopia progression. Studies have reported approximately 30–52% myopia control, depending on the lens design, child and study.


Daytime Myopia-Control Contact Lenses
Dual-focus or multifocal contact lenses use different optical zones to provide clear vision while creating peripheral treatment signals that help slow excessive eye growth. Daily disposable and other lens options are available for suitable children.


Myopia-Control Glasses
Newer spectacle-lens designs such as DIMS and other myopia-control technologies provide clear vision while incorporating treatment zones designed to slow myopia progression.

Atropine Rx drops 阿托品處方 35-50%*

Low-dose atropine eye drops can help slow myopia progression and excessive eye growth in children. Different concentrations, 0.01% to 0.05% , may be used depending on the child's age, progression, response and side effects.

Atropine is usually used once daily, typically at bedtime. Because it does not correct blurry vision, children still need their usual glasses or contact lenses.


Why atropine may be recommended:

  • Simple once-daily treatment 
  • Can slow myopia progression and axial elongation 
  • Different concentrations can be tailored      to the child's response 
  • Can be combined with Ortho-K or other      optical treatments when additional control is needed 
  • Treatment can be monitored using      prescription and axial-length measurements 


Low-dose atropine is generally well tolerated. Some children may experience larger pupils, light sensitivity or mild difficulty focusing up close. Higher concentrations generally provide greater myopia-control efficacy but may also produce more side effects. 

The LAMP trial demonstrated a concentration-dependent response, with 0.05% outperforming 0.025% and 0.01% over the first year. 


Every child responds differently. We monitor both myopia progression and eye growth and adjust the concentration—or consider combination treatment—when needed.

Atropine

Sometimes one treatment alone may not provide enough myopia control. When this happens, combining treatments may provide additional benefit.

The strongest evidence currently supports combining low-dose atropine with Ortho-K. Studies have shown that this combination can slow axial eye growth more than Ortho-K alone in some children.

Every child responds differently. We monitor your child's prescription and axial length to determine how well treatment is working.


When additional control is needed, our doctors may consider:

  • Adding low-dose      atropine to AOK Eye Braces® / Ortho-K, Myopia Control Day AOK or      myopia-control glasses 
  • Adjusting the      atropine concentration when appropriate 
  • Modifying the      optical treatment 
  • Considering      other or combined myopia-control strategies

Spending more time outdoors is one of the simplest things families can do to help reduce the risk of developing myopia. The benefit appears greatest in children who are not yet myopic or are at risk of becoming myopic (“pre-myopes”).


Research suggests that exposure to the much brighter natural light outdoors may play an important role. Outdoor environments may also provide different visual experiences and less prolonged near work, although exactly how outdoor time protects against myopia is still being studied.


It is the time outdoors that matters—not looking at green plants or avoiding “blue light.”


Before myopia develops:

Outdoor time can help reduce or delay the onset of myopia.
Once a child is already myopic: 

Outdoor time remains important, but usually does not replace active myopia-control treatment when treatment is needed.

 Screens are part of school, work and everyday life—but reducing unnecessary screen time and prolonged near work is a healthy habit for 

both children and adults.

For children at risk of myopia, we encourage families to:

  • Limit unnecessary recreational screen time 
  • Take regular breaks from prolonged near work 
  • Avoid holding devices too close 
  • Balance screen time with more outdoor  time and physical activity 

Long periods of near work and less time outdoors are associated with a greater risk of developing myopia. It is more accurate to think about a child's overall visual environment than to say that screens alone cause myopia.


Why Reduce Unnecessary Screen Time?

It isn't only about myopia.

Excessive screen time can affect:

  • Vision — more  prolonged near work 
  • Digital Device Addiction  — devices can become difficult to put down 
  • Relationships  — less conversation and time together 
  • Physical health  — less exercise, outdoor activity and sleep 


Our advice is practical: use screens when they are helpful or necessary—but don't let unnecessary screen time replace outdoor activity, exercise, sleep and time together.

How Does Ortho-K Work?

  Ortho-K (orthokeratology) uses specially designed, highly oxygen-permeable lenses that are worn while your child sleeps. During sleep, the lens and tear layer gently and temporarily reshape the front surface of the cornea by redistributing its outer epithelial layer.

Age alone does not determine whether a child is ready for Ortho-K. We consider their rate of myopia progression, eye health, maturity, hygiene, parental involvement and individual risk factors.
