Dry Eye Disease & Meibomian Gland Dysfunction

Understanding Dry Eye & MGD

Dry eye is often more than simply not having enough tears.

A healthy tear film has three important components — mucus, water and oil. The outer oil layer, produced by the meibomian glands in your eyelids, helps prevent your tears from evaporating too quickly.

With Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), these glands become blocked or produce abnormal oils. This creates an unstable tear film, increased evaporation and inflammation.

Over time, MGD can lead to progressive and irreversible loss of meibomian glands and make Dry Eye Disease increasingly difficult to treat. Chronic disease may also contribute to corneal nerve dysfunction and persistent neuropathic ocular pain.

Our goal is not simply to relieve symptoms, but to protect your meibomian glands, ocular surface and long-term comfort.

Dry Eye Evaluation & Treatment

The right treatment starts with understanding the cause.

Dry Eye Disease can have different causes and often involves more than one part of the tear film. Our doctors evaluate your symptoms, tear film, meibomian glands, cornea and overall eye health to determine what may be contributing to your dry eye.

Treatment is individualized and may include home care, nutritional support and advanced in-office treatments such as IPL and LipiFlow, depending on your findings and needs.

For more advanced disease, additional treatment may be required to manage ocular-surface damage, inflammation or corneal nerve-related pain.

The earlier we identify the underlying problem, the better our opportunity to preserve healthy gland function and prevent further deterioration.
